The Automation Technician is responsible for a wide variety of duties supporting the design and construction of custom automation equipment/systems used for the purpose of manufacturing products at all IDEAL divisions.  The position reports to the Automation Group Manager and is responsible for construction and assembly of automation equipment designed by the Automation Engineers within the team.


  • Work as a team with Automation Group Staff and divisional Product Engineers.
  • Assemble simple and complex automation equipment that may utilize pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, PLC’s (Programmable Logic Controllers), controls, actuators, sensors, data acquisition, vision systems, robotics, etc.
  • Fabricate parts as required.
  • Perform electrical wiring of Automation equipment as required.
  • Perform part and system testing as required.
  • Insure quality of all parts produced in assigned work area.
  • Attain safety, quality and productivity goals.
  • Complete correspondence, documentation and reports as required.
  • Maintain safety and good housekeeping practices and lead by example.
  • Read, follow and become familiar with all details and work instructions.
  • Participate in Continual Improvement activities.
  • Adhere to customer requirements, Business Operating System and company policies.
  • Support and training at customers sites.
  • Other related support.


  • Technical Associates degree in related field is desired or combination of high school diploma and experience will be considered.
  • Experience in automation or related experience in manufacturing is preferred.
  • Fabrication and machining experience is preferred.
  • Experienced with Statistical Process Controls (SPC) is considered a plus.
  • Occasional travel required.



  • Ability to understand and align activities with department priorities and objectives.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written). 
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to successfully manage multiple activities/initiatives at one time.
  • Comfortable using computer software such as Microsoft OfficeTM
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with a high regard for accuracy, attention to detail and confidentiality.
  • Must be able to work from schematics and rough sketches to complete assignments.
  • Must be able to modify programs within specified process parameters.
  • Able to work well with others; build and maintain positive employee relations.
  • Able to prepare, read and interpret written reports, instructions, procedures and guidelines.
  • Able to use all measuring equipment.
  • Able to repetitively lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must have excellent electrical and mechanical aptitude, to include electrical wiring, power up, controls, PLC’s, (programming and troubleshooting helpful but not required) pneumatics and mechanical abilities.
  • Must be able to install, modify and troubleshoot systems as required.
  • Familiarity with CAD (Solidworks preferred) is helpful to assist engineering teams.
  • Must be able to read and understand standard electrical schematics.
  • Should be familiar with basic hand and power tools.
